Uhm… Why does it seem like she’s new to the school? It was specifically said Todd lived in the same school district so she won’t be switching schools.
Yes it’s the same school, but not necessarily all the same students (moved, transfered, etc). I thought the playground would be a good spot to catch some “first impressions”.
Is Todd allergic to some chemical in her skin?
Aquatic life is well known for a variety of toxins, some mild, and some extremely not. Considering Todd hasn’t started flailing around and gurgling, I’d suspect whatever he got is quite mild and/or a minimal dose. Still, something to think about.
Aquatic life is well known for a variety of toxins, some mild, and some extremely not. In an environment with free 3-dimensional movement, it’s a good idea to make sure your prey can’t swim away if you only get a brief bite. A randomly twitching muscle would mess up swimming pretty effectively.

I also wonder if it isn’t be due to her stress of school’s beginning that she’s perhaps producing more of the chemicals that make her saliva toxic.

Actually, if you ask me, it looks like Amanda might approach her in a somewhat friendly way, given the way she looks in the panel and how she reacted to Heather being adopted. Maybe she’ll be looking for common ground.

I always made friends with the weird kids, because I’ve never met a one who was judgemental.

I recall one of my lecturers saying “I dont hate kids, I just think there should be some alternative”. Then he paused and added, “some sort of kit, perhaps…” Occasionally, I see his point.

Indeterminate. XD I just more or less talked out loud in different accents and typed it up phonetically

I pity Todd right now… I have a feeling that his meeting with Andi won’t be too pleasant. She probably won’t even let him finish a sentence. And when she sees the kiss-mark, she’ll think, “Is that a HICKEY, Todd?!?!?! I can’t believe you would BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH ENDLESS RANT BLAH BLAH BLAH TODD IS TUNING HER OUT BLAH BLAH BLAH…”

Hmm, two things. One that girl looks like Goo from Foster’s home for imaginary friends. And two, I’m betting Selkie thought she would be accepted more now since she’s been adopted and is now a “Normal” kid with a family.
And if that is Amanda then this could get really interesting really fast.

If you’ll notice both panels showing him in the car come before the panel where he pulls out. Whether he wears a seatbelt or not, we may be able to assume he puts it on between hanging up the phone and pulling out of the parking spot.
I’ll be the first to say it: Wow, these kids were allowed to watch The Omen?? Steep differentials in parenting LOL. That would give most kids nightmares and the parents wouldn’t likely do it. But, lo, we live in the age of teh internets, and since then anyone can look up anything.
My aunt and uncle let my cousins watch the Underworld movies (which admittedly are less horror and more bloody adventure) when they were 5 and 8, and I watched Child’s Play and Stephen King’s It before I was 8. XD
Pennywise was one of the most traumatic childhood movie experiences I can remember. Fun times.

Plenty of people are losing the “Shelter your kids” idea, since it’d be hard to do now anyway. More and more parents are embracing the idea of teaching kids what they’re seeing, like mine luckily did (yay progressive parenting ^__^).
Also, since people flock together with shared mindsets/raising, it’d make sense that a group knows it, so even if these three know it it may be an isolated occurrence… hard to say, with what we have know.

I’m not sure if this is even an acceptable thing to post here, but I’ll do so anyway.
Basically, I daydreamed about Selkie being some sort of super delinquent, beating up anyone who teased her fishy qualities half to death with a wooden sword (or, barring that, her fists) right after reading this update. Too bad this will never happen in canon, though, Selkie being a good girl and all.
Speaking of things that will never happen in canon… Dave, may I get your permission to use Selkie and all associated characters and settings in my fanfiction? (You know, so that I can write Selkie as some kind of fish-magic wielding badass?)

I just wanted to say how much I REALLY love this comic. I’ve had a similar idea for my own comic– and just seeing something that s nicely captures my idea of a nice story is wonderful. I love Selkie of course, and her adoptive daddy. I was really hoping there would be more, but alas! I shall just have to keep checking back on update days. I’m curious and excited to see where the story goes, and I hope poor Selkie catches a break from those mean kids soon!! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful story, and I look forward to reading more.

Couple suggestions:
You probably have something thought about Selkie and sushi.
She’ll NOT be alergic to algae since the fish she eats will eat THAT and some will still be undigested in their bellies when she swallows them.
Cats and dogs nibble on vegetation to settle their bellies, her people can do that with algae if you wish.
If they eat marine animals she’ll be partial to fat meat – lots of blubber.
Livers will go down a treat.
Being sensitive to electrical fields – maybe underwater – may provide a nice story hook.

Regarding Todd’s reaction to the kiss, are people forgetting how Crook got sick after biting Selkie? Clearly there’s some kind of toxin in her skin/bodily fluids.
Director’s Commentary; “I think “psychic devil orphan” sounds like something that might come out of Georges mouth.”
When I read the comic (before reading your commentary), my first thought was “Psychic Devil Orphan” sounded like a grunge band! LOL
Poor Todd. Not only will he have to deal with the itchy reaction to Selkie’s kisses … he may end up having to deal with a crying/upset Selkie and/or disciplinary action at the school because Selkie got in a fight! (I don’t think she would allow herself to be pushed around TOO much … but that’s just me.)
